A Personal Lament
How long must I wait for you?
How long must I ask
to deeply and personally experience you?
Make yourself known, God;
not with glimpses, peeks, and whispers,
but with undeniable, grand, and kind displays.
No more redemptive violence of grace,
but wildly encouraging blessings of grace.
I struggle with many things
and need a boost.
You tell us we are made in your image,
Yet your image-bearers are filled with violence and selfishness.
You made the human heart,
then told us it’s deceitful above all things
and desperately wicked.
We are invited to choose life,
yet you direct our paths,
narrow the gate,
choose only a few,
and send powerful delusions.
You challenge us to seek you,
yet you harden hearts, blind eyes,
and speak in parables and ancient tongues.
We are imprisoned/enslaved to a law of sin,
yet we will be judged for our inevitable behavior.
You are sovereign and loving,
yet you allow an enemy to seek to devour us.
When I think of these things
they bewilder and confound me.
But there’s one thing I know.
I have experienced the realness, the superpower,
the practicality, and the beauty of your grace.
When I chose to love my enemy,
I flourished;
and a wrecked relationship
was inconceivably restored.
Satisfy every person’s desire for the infinite and unimaginable,
and do so in a deeply personal way,
so we will celebrate, desire, and pursue you
without wavering,
and we will love and encourage each other
the same.
